Frederick Breathe Free offers an 'in-office CT scan or equivalents' to determine if a patient could benefit from treatment

Frederick Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers is making use of computerized tomography (CT) technology, which can help to determine the severity of sinus issues in patients struggling to breathe easily.
In some cases, patients may require conventional surgery or minimally invasive surgery. A CT scan of paranasal sinuses is required to diagnose the condition.
“Conventionally (patients) would have to go to a stand-alone radiology center or a hospital to get the CT scan, but our practice and all of the affiliates with Capitol Breathe Free Centers offer an in-office CT scan or equivalents to assess the anatomy and whether or not they are an intervention candidate, such as balloon (sinuplasty) or conventional surgery,” Dr. Jamie Oberman of Frederick Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers said.
CT scans combine X-ray images and computer processing to create images of bones, blood vessels and soft tissues, providing more detailed scans than simple X-rays do, according to Mayo Clinic. Generally, CT scans are used to determine internal injuries from collisions and trauma, but they can also be used to take images of nearly any body part.
One drawback of CT scans is that they do expose the subject to more radiation than they would receive with an X-ray, as CTs collect more detailed imaging, but the exposure to such radiation has not been proven to cause any long-term health effects. The benefits outweigh the risks from information gained during CT scans.
